What You Need:
- large french bread loaf: buy a large loaf of soft french bread.
- assorted deli meats: turkey, roast beef, chicken, ham, or salami.
- dijon mustard: or mustard spread you like.
- pickles: I used little cornichons, dill pickles or even sweet bread and butter pickles would be great.
- tomato: slice and pat it dry to keep the french bread from getting soggy.
- romaine lettuce: or iceberg lettuce would work well.
- large red radishes: pick large red radishes, these will be your "bloodshot eyeballs".
- green olives: with red pimentos, these also make your eyeballs pupils.
- whole black olives: these will become eyeballs
- candy eyeballs: can be ordered online, and are so inexpensive and fun for not only this recipe but can be used in many creative ways.
- pepperoncini's: sliced and pat dry a little.
- cheddar cheese: sliced and is also used to make the "cheese teeth" for your sandwich.
Other Halloween Sub Sandwich Ideas:
- meats: smoked ham, salami, sliced chicken, etc.
- sliced cheese: pepper jack, Colby, swiss, provolone, mozzarella
- yellow mustard
- mayonnaise
- artichoke spread
- horseradish spread
How To Make A Halloween Sub Sandwich:
Slice the french bread loaf and open so both sides are flat.
Use your choice of spread: mayo, Dijon, mustard, horseradish, or artichoke spread. Add lettuce, sliced meats of your choice, tomato, and pickles.
Next, lay the cheddar cheese (or cheese you like) on a board and cut "teeth" using a pizza wheel.
Place the pieces of cheese on top of the other sandwich fillings, and place extra pieces of cheese on the lower part of the sandwich for lower teeth.
Now make your edible eyeballs...
How To Make Edible Eyeballs:
Red Radishes Eyes...
- Using a vegetable peeler, cut away the red skin in strips without going too deep, it leaves a "bloodshot" eye look to the radish.
- Work in strips from the front of the eyeball to the back leaving squiggly red lines.
- Using a ¼ measuring teaspoon, scoop out a place to put a cut piece of green olive with red pimento. Insert a toothpick, and stick into the top of the sub sandwich, it looks cute and holds your sandwich together!
Black Olive Eyes...
- IMPORTANT NOTE: Put these together right before serving your sandwich, as the candy does soften and melts in the olives.
- Push small candy eyeballs into the whole black olives, insert a toothpick, and place on your sub sandwich.
Next, lay the cheddar cheese (or cheese you like) on a board and cut "teeth" using a pizza wheel. Use a vegetable peeler to cut away the red peel, front to back, use ¼" teaspoon to scoop out place for a slice for pimento olive, insert a toothpick and place on sandwich! Edible eyeballs are made from whole black olives, candy eyes, and toothpicks.
