Egg Salad Recipe
This is a classic recipe for dill egg salad. But, if you prefer to leave the dill out or can't find it, try some other flavor variations in the printable recipe card.
- 4 slices white, rye bread, pumpernickel, etc.
- 6 Hard-boiled Eggs peeled diced
- ¼ cup mayonnaise (or plain Greek yogurt)
- ¼ cup diced celery
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 2 teaspoons fresh dill finely minced
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper
- optional: Pickled Red Onions
First Thing, Make Perfect Hard Boiled Eggs
Ever struggled to make perfect hard-boiled eggs? With the main ingredient being the star of the show, you want perfect eggs, with no black ring on the egg yolks, and beautiful egg whites.
Let's face it, there are many ways to boil eggs, plus new fads, and trends. Some are classic like a large pan on the stove top, a trend started with baking them in the oven, or a pressure cooker egg recipe also known as the new instant pot method. But of all these, my personal preference is a simple recipe that steams them in just 12 minutes!!!
Most importantly, the cooking process should be fast and the eggs should peel easily, and the clean up minimal. This is the easiest way to cook your eggs, so next time try out this amazing method.
EGG BOILING PRO TIP: To steam hard boil eggs, bring cool water to a boil. Place a vegetable steamer basket in the pan. Use just enough cold water to be right below the steamer basket. Place eggs in the basket, cover with a lid, and set a timer for 12 minutes. Remove to an ice bath for 10 minutes, the egg shells peel right off!
The secret is the high heat of the steaming over hot water. It shocks the eggs so they cook and peel perfectly!
Next, Mix The Egg Salad Mixture
Once your eggs are cooked, peel and chop them finely into small pieces, and place them into a large bowl.
Add the sea salt, black pepper, tangy Dijon mustard, mayonnaise, finely minced fresh dill, fresh lemon juice (it add great brightness and flavor!), and finely diced celery with the chopped eggs.
Gently fold with the chopped eggs. Chill before serving for at least an hour. Overnight, is even better to let the flavors develop for the best traditional egg salad sandwiches!
Spread your egg salad recipe with dill on white, rye, or pumpernickel bread. It is also great to add some more minced fresh dill and pickled red onions!
Keep refrigerated in an airtight container and eat within 3-5 days. Creamy egg salad needs to be refrigerated, and should not be a room temperature for more than 2 hours.
Easy Egg Salad Flavor Variations
All classic egg salad recipes have boiled eggs, mustard, salt, pepper, onion, mayo, celery, and dill pickle relish. And there are many different additions to customize with ingredients you have on hand to create the best egg salad sandwich recipes.
Fresh Herbs: Try fresh chives or green onions, or fresh parsley. If you can't find fresh dill weed in your store, some dried dill works in a pinch.
Dill Pickles or Dill Pickle Relish: Adding dill relish or sweet relish is so good, and many people adore a dill pickle egg salad recipe.
Seasonings: A pinch of celery seed, garlic powder, or onion powder are also a nice addition.
Acids & Oils: There are people who like a dash of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, pickle juice, or a splash of apple cider vinegar in theirs.
Mustards: Brown or yellow mustard is always delicious and works in place of Dijon mustard.
Creamy Additions: In place of mayonnaise, try sour cream or any plain yogurt.
Fun Additions: Some chopped bacon, dill pickles, red onions, and chopped green olives are great. Also, capers or fresh vegetables like diced cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and even avocado!
