How To Make Halloween Deviled Eggs

First, make hardboiled eggs. Boil eggs on the stove, use an instant pot, or try my easy steam method that makes eggs super easy to peel!

    Steamed Hard Boiled Eggs Recipe
Steamed hard boiled eggs cook perfectly every time with no green ring. So easy to peel, the eggshells miraculously slip right off in minutes!

In a large bowl, mix water and black food color dye. Hold each egg in a small towel and crack with the back of a spoon all over, then place them down in the black water.

    Pin

Cover and chill the eggs in the fridge for at least two hours.

Peel and slice the boiled eggs in half. Instead of scooping out the yolk with a spoon (that can tear the eggshell), gently push from the back of the egg to pop the yolk out into the bowl.

    Pin

In a medium bowl, add the yolks, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, salt, pepper, cream Fraiche' or soft whipped cream cheese.

    Pin

Mash the yolk mixture until well combined with a fork, mix with a spatula or hand mixer. Add about 10 drops of orange food dye to the mixture, mix well, and load into a large zip lock bag fitted with a large star number one tip. It helps to put the tip in the pastry bag, and use a tall glass to hold it while filling it with a spatula.

Fold down the top of the piping bag. Pipe the filling back into the boiled egg whites, and sprinkle with a few black sesame seeds. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve in a deviled egg carrier box or on a plate.

    Deviled Egg Make-Ahead Tips

    1. Boil the eggs, slice them in half, and keep them covered on a tray.
    2. Fit your ziptop bag with a large star piping tip and your orange deviled egg mixture filling and keep refrigerated.
    3. Swirl the filling into each eggshell and sprinkle with black sesame seeds right at serving time!

    Halloween Deviled Egg Variations

    • Color them green, purple, or black.
    • Place black olives on top to look like spiders, and cut a whole black olive in half. Use one olive half for the body, and cut a thin olive slice for each leg.
    • Top with creme fraiche and a sprinkle of caviar for an elegant twist.
    • Swap in yellow mustard in place of Dijon mustard.
    • Add a teaspoon of garlic powder to add more flavor.
    • Dye-boiled cracked eggs in orange, purple, or green water and make filling in a color you choose.
    • Make Halloween pumpkin eggs, dye whole boiled egg shells in water with orange food coloring and pipe in orange filled, garnish with parsley for the pumpkin stem.
    • Garnish with herbs, pomegranate seeds, or roasted pumpkin seeds.

    Deviled Egg FAQ

What is the history of deviled eggs?

Deviled eggs date back to the Roman Empire, and got popular in the 1940s. Everyone loves them. Eggs are hard-boiled, the yolks are whipped with other tasty ingredients and piped back into the shells.

What are classic deviled egg ingredients?

    boiled eggs
    mayonnaise
    mustard
    paprika
    salt and pepper

The egg yolks are whipped or mixed with mayonnaise (or sour creme, creme fraiche, or cream cheese), mustard (yellow or Dijon), paprika, salt, and pepper, they are replaced inside the egg white halves and served cold.
Lots of other flavorings can be added, and that is where deviled eggs are something truly spectacular.

PRO TIP: Make your deviled eggs, and store them in an inexpensive deviled egg storage box in the fridge. They are easily portable to take to a potluck party or plate up for your event!
