Dipped in chocolate and rolled in chopped nuts and dried fruit, these chocolate bananas (aka choco bananas) are frozen dessert treats for hot summer days.
Chocolate-covered bananas always remind me of the best days of summer when I lived on Balboa Island in Southern California.
There are several small shops on the island that are famous for frozen bananas and sell them to the locals and tourists topped with all kinds of fantastic toppings.
You can go crazy adding any toppings you love...
What Are Chocolate Covered Bananas?
Bananas are frozen on popsicle sticks, dipped in melted dark chocolate, and sprinkled with ALL KINDS of yummy toppings.
What Other Toppings Will Work?
- shredded coconut
- crushed banana chips
- pistachios
- candied ginger
- dried apricots
- dried cranberries
- dried blueberries
- sprinkles (they make vegan sprinkles too!)
- dried cherries
- dried pineapple
- mini chocolate chips
- peanuts
- slivered almonds
- small mini candies of your choice!
Let's Make Them!
PRO TIP: Your bananas will need to be on the sticks and frozen before decorating. This helps the chocolate firm quickly and so the toppings do not slide off!
Prep Ahead ~ 2 hours
- Line an airtight container with parchment baking paper.
- Peel the bananas. Insert a popsicle stick or a large skewer pushing it into the banana about halfway through. Place the bananas in the prepared container and freeze for 2 hours.
- Have all your toppings ready to go; chop or crush your nuts, candy pieces, cookies, or dried fruit.
Dip and Decorate Bananas
- Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water.
- Dip 1 frozen banana into the melted chocolate and using a spoon, cover any parts that remain uncoated.
- Sprinkle the frozen banana with the toppings and set aside on parchment paper-lined box in the freezer.
- The melted chocolate becomes hard quickly, so work fast.
- When all the bananas are dipped and coated, pop the lid on the container and freeze until ready to serve.

Classic to get them at the summer fair! Fun to have a healthy homemade treat on hand for those hot days.
I've been searching for the perfect frozen treat to bring to my kids while they're working on the farm! This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks!
Oh GOOD! That sounds like a great healthy reward for kids to get their chores done. Plus everything is better dipped in chocolate right? Thanks Amy!
