Recipe for frozen chocolate covered bananas a healthy summer dessert.Pin

Frozen Chocolate Covered Bananas are dipped in melted chocolate and rolled in your favorite toppings of dried fruit, chopped nuts, colorful sprinkles, crushed cookies, or candies for a wholesome frozen dessert.

The Original Frozen Bananas were made in Newport Beach California, and are now a famous beach treat for locals and tourists alike. You can make them taste the way you want with endless topping ideas.

Freeze up these iconic beach town treats for long hot summer days...

    Let's Make Chocolate Covered Bananas

    • 6 whole bananas (ripe bananas)
    • 2 cups dark chocolate chips
    • 2 tablespoons crushed mixed nuts
    • 2 tablespoons grated coconut flakes
    • 2 tablespoons chopped dried fruit

PRO TIP: Your bananas will need to be on the sticks and frozen before decorating. This helps the chocolate firm quickly and so the toppings will not slide off!

Freezing Bananas - Prep Ahead 2 hours

    1. Line an airtight container or sheet pan with parchment baking paper. Make sure it fits in your freezer.
    2. Peel the bananas. Keep them whole or slice them in half for kids. Insert a popsicle stick pushing it into the banana about halfway through. Place the banana in the prepared container and freeze for 2 hours. Your bananas will need to be on the sticks and frozen before dipping in chocolate. This helps the chocolate firm quickly and so the toppings will not slide off!
    3. Have all your toppings ready to go; chop or crush your nuts, candy, cookies, or dried fruit. Chop the nuts or cookies on a cutting with a knife or run them through a food processor.

    Chocolate Dipping And Toppings

    1. Melt the dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Stir the chocolate every so often.
    2. Dip 1 frozen banana into the melted chocolate and using a spoon, cover any parts that remain uncoated.
    3. Sprinkle the frozen banana with the crushed nuts or dried fruit and set it aside in a single layer on a parchment paper lined baking sheet to flash freeze in the freezer. The melted chocolate becomes hard quickly, so work fast. If you use candy bars and cookies chop those into smaller pieces so they stick to the bananas.
    4. When all the bananas are dipped and coated, keep frozen until ready to serve. Store them in a freezer bag or airtight container.

    Frozen Banana Slices

You can also make frozen sliced bananas, and cut the bananas into ½" thick slices with a knife. Then freeze the slices, and use a skewer or fork to dip them into the melted chocolate and sprinkle with toppings.

    Who invented the Frozen Banana?

Don Phillips, also known as the frozen banana king, opened the first frozen banana stand - The Original Frozen Banana - opened on Balboa Peninsula, located in Orange County, California, circa 1940. There are two places on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, California that still make them to this day.

Where can you buy frozen bananas?

There are several small shops on Balboa Island California that are famous for their frozen bananas and sell them to the locals and tourists topped with all kinds of fantastic toppings.

Some people also call these chocolate bananas or choco bananas.
