For years I have made my own salad dressings, in jars. I learned how to make them decades ago watching my Mom, and her dressings were so simple and fresh.
Next time you are craving a creamy dressing skip the bottled stuff and make the best blue cheese dressing right at home...

Homemade simply tastes amazing, has no yucky ingredients, and is very cost-effective. We all grew up with our favorite brand of salad dressing, but I promise this beats even your fave.
We are not going to make a big mess in the kitchen today either. One of my favorite ways to make easy homemade dressing is simply to load the ingredients in a large jar. Pop the lid on, (metal or plastic) shake and your dressing is done! It also acts as a storage container, and no other dishes to wash!
How To Make Blue Cheese Dressing
Take the time to make homemade dressing. You will be rewarded, it is not oily or filled with strange shelf stabilizers and additives. Sure to become an instant family favorite and go-to for any green salad or chilled classic Wedge Salad.
- ½ cup crumbled blue cheese
- ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (or ½ cup mayonnaise)
- ½ fresh lemon juice (or ¼ cup white wine vinegar)
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt (sea salt)
- ½ teaspoon fresh cracked pepper
Add the crumbled blue cheese, yogurt, lemon juice, and sea salt into a Mason jar. Close the lid tightly, shake well for 1 minute. Or simply whisk in a small bowl.
Open and add 2 more tablespoons of crumbles to make it even chunkier. Add a little bit of water, buttermilk, or little milk to thin if desired.
PRO TIP: The secret for a thicker dressing is to use plain Greek Yogurt. You can also swap in light mayo or miracle whip, but it will change the texture and flavor a bit.
Storage Tips - Just screw on the lid of the jar or any other airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
Serving Ideas - Pair with a nice loaf of crusty bread, soft butter, herb butter, or sun-dried tomato butter.
Type of Blue Cheese FAQ
Today blue cheese is made in many countries and in a growing variety of styles. There are dozens of different kinds found around the world. The classics are French Roquefort, English stilton, Italian gorgonzola, and Spanish cabrales.
Roquefort is a sheep milk cheese from Southern France and is one of the world's best-known blue cheeses. Though similar cheeses are produced elsewhere, EU law dictates that only those cheeses aged in the natural Combalou caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon may bear the name Roquefort, as it is a recognized geographical indication, or has a protected designation of origin. The cheese is white, tangy, crumbly, and slightly moist, with distinctive veins of blue mold. It has a characteristic fragrance and flavor with a notable taste of butyric acid; the blue veins provide a sharp tang. It has no rind; the exterior is edible and slightly salty.
Stilton is an English cheese, produced in two varieties: Blue, which has Penicillium roqueforti added to generate a characteristic smell and taste, and White, which does not. Both have been granted the status of a protected designation of origin (PDO) by the European Commission, requiring that only such cheese produced in the three counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, and Nottinghamshire may be called Stilton. The cheese takes its name from the village of Stilton, now in Cambridgeshire, where it has long been sold.
Gorgonzola is made from unskimmed cow's milk, this is one of the most popular blue cheeses. Gorgonzola is not just the Italian name. Similar to Parmigiano-Reggiano and Gruyère, it is a unique style of cheese manufactured according to specific regulations defined by European Union law.
Cabrales (Spanish: queso de Cabrales) is a blue cheese made in the artisan tradition by rural dairy farmers in Asturias, Spain. This cheese can be made from pure, unpasteurized cow’s milk or blended in the traditional manner with goat and/or sheep milk, which lends the cheese a stronger, spicier flavor.

Recipe variations also can include dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, fresh parsley, full fat cream cheese, too much sugar, red wine vinegar, green onion, and a fresh garlic clove. And some recipes use a blender or food processor. Although you can easily whisk it in a bowl or shake the ingredients in a jar.
