Let's Make Flavorful Burgers!
An amazing burger needs a few things. A starting point for homemade hamburger patties is good ingredients, seasoning, and the right grill heat...
- 3 pounds 80/20 ground beef (use 1-2 tablespoons burger seasoning blend per pound of ground beef or meat)
- ¼ cup burger seasoning
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
Mix The Burger Meat
Combine all the seasoning ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir to mix using a small whisk to evenly combine.
In a large bowl, mix ¼ cup of burger seasoning into 3 pounds of ground beef, preferably 80/20 hamburger meat which is ground chuck. Optional: Mix ground beef, seasoning, and 2-3 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce.
Use a large ice cream scoop to even portion the homemade hamburger meat patties, then press hamburger patties on a parchment-lined sheet pan in the center of the burger with your fingers to flatten.
Now, Grill The Burgers...
Heat your charcoal grill or gas grill to medium-hot heat. Cook over the direct heat of the flames for 5-7 minutes cook time on each side of the burger until the burgers reach 165 degrees internal temperature. Use a good instant read thermometer or digital thermometer. Cooking times will vary, based on your grill heat, and the burger meat temperature.
You want a medium heat to high heat, for the best burgers. You can melt a slice of cheese and put it on a toasted bun with your favorite toppings.
Store the remaining burger seasoning in a clamp jar for up to 6 months, and use it to add natural flavors to season chicken, steak, or ribs.
Best Burger Seasoning Tips
The flavor of your burger will gain so much flavor with these tips. Mixing in a seasoning blend before grilling is the best thing for a good burger.
Making Burgers
- Only mix your ground beef and rub for under a minute. This makes an amazing juicy burger that doesn't overwork the meat which can make them tough. A dense burger is not what you want. This technique also creates a nice crust. The hot grill sears the outside of the burgers with all those nooks and crannies, so you get the perfect burger every time!
- Season the beef burgers evenly and add Worcestershire sauce for an even more maximum flavorful burger taste.
- If you cook burgers indoors in a cast iron skillet, one of the best ways to add flavor is to cook in a bit of bacon grease! It adds the best flavor and is a chef's secret. Brush some on the sides of the patty too.
- My favorite way to portion each burger patty from the whole batch is to use a large ice cream scoop. The great thing is this keeps them an even size so they all cook at the same time!
- Press the burgers on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper for easy cleanup. You can cover a lot of burgers with plastic wrap and chill to grill off to grill later.
Grilling Burgers
- Spread butter on the buns, and toast the buns on the grill for maximum flavor in your Homemade Hamburgers.
- Wire brush the grill well, then use a light coating of vegetable oil on a paper towel for a non-stick surface on your grill grates.
- This burger seasoning works for all kinds of best homemade burgers, even veggie burgers, pork, lamb, or chicken.
- And the last and MOST important thing, Burger Sauce! This recipe is very similar to In-N-Out Burgers in Southern California, which is known as one of the best hamburger drive thru joints!
Hamburger FAQ
Ground Chuck is the classic burger choice because it has the most flavor due to the higher fat content. Fat equals flavor! It will be labeled 80/20 at the grocery store.
Ground Chuck "80/20" is a ratio of 80 percent lean beef to 20 percent fat, typically ground chuck.
"85/15" is 85 percent lean and 15 percent fat labeled ground round.
"90/10" is 90 percent lean and 10 percent fat ground sirloin has great flavor, is lower in flat so won't be as juicy of a burger, and is more expensive.
Lean ground beef options like ground round and ground sirloin don't have as much fat and are typically more expensive than chuck.

In the patty recipe did you add butter? I see a comment to add 1/4 of something but it isn’t clear to me what and then the photo looks like butter to me. Please forgive me if I am simply missing your explanation somewhere! All looks great!
