Boursin Cheese Recipe
Make homemade Boursin Cheese packed full of delightfully fresh high quality flavors.
There are no artificial preservatives or added ingredients in this easy whipped cream cheese recipe. Boursin from the store is great, and I buy it alot, but it has shelf stable ingredients. So let's make it with a few special fresh natural ingredients right in our kitchen...
PRO TIP: An herbed cheese spread is the perfect choice to make ahead, and tuck in the fridge even a day or two before your party!
- 8 ounces of regular cream cheese softened
- ¼ cup fresh herbs parsley chives, dill, basil
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 tablespoons real grated parmesan cheese
- ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
- 2-3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream, heavy cream, or whole milk
How To Make Boursin
- Bring the cream cheese block to room temperature. In a large mixing bowl or stand mixer with a whisk attachment add the softened cream cheese, garlic powder, heavy cream, freshly grated parmesan cheese, sea salt, and finely chopped herbs. I used fresh parsley, chives, dill, and basil. And the best way to chop them quickly is in a coffee mug, with a clean pair of kitchen shears!
- Using a hand mixer, beat until well combined on medium-high speed and fluffy with a smooth texture. Use a rubber spatula to scrape down the sides of the large bowl. This airy texture adds lightness and makes it easy to spread onto bread, crackers, etc. Add 1-2 more tablespoons of heavy cream until its a soft smooth texture.
- Make this cream cheese mixture up to a day ahead, and is a great option if you want to assemble a day before your party. Store in the fridge in an airtight container or small bowl covered with plastic wrap. Bring it to room temperature to help it spread easily.
Who invented Boursin?
The story goes that a man named François Boursin from Normandy, France invented the now famous Boursin Cheese.
François was a cheesemaker who perfected his signature cheese product over many years. Eventually in 1957 he opened a cheese factory in Croisy-sur-Eure, in northern France to produce his famous cheese.

Whipped Cream Cheese vs Regular Cream Cheese?
Regular blocks of cream cheese are hard and don't spread easily especially cold from the fridge. And, they really don't have a lot of flavor. By simply bringing the block up to room temperature, and whipping it with a hand mixer adds an airy texture for ease of spreading onto breads, toast, bagels and more. Savory flavors can be added from like herbs or vegetables to sweet fruits of strawberry, blueberry, cranberry, cinnamon, or jam.
Different Flavor Variations
There are so many ways to add extra flavors! Use quality ingredients, and get creative using things you love in your kitchen.
Fresh Herbs: Create the kind of cream cheese that sounds good to you. Try sage, thyme, oregano (go easy it's strong), fine scallions, or green onions. Mince them fine for a mild taste, also, dried herbs like chives, dill, parsley, or shallots are great additions. But fresh adds a pop of green color and freshness you can't get with dry herbs. Other herbs to try like marjoram, tarragon, lavendar, or rosemary would be so nice.
Real Cream: Quality dairy products always make a big difference in your recipes. Use heavy whipping cream if possible, other swaps that work are a mixture of milk and some Greek yogurt or plain yogurt (which will add a tangy taste), and regular or skim milk in a pinch.
Savory Additions: Make a more garlicky flavor, and add some fresh finely crushed real garlic with the same ingredients. Minced caramelized onions would also be amazing.
Best Cream Cheese: Buy a quality brand and stay with the regular fat version, not the low fat ones. The amount of fat makes a difference when whipping cream cheese. Also, did you know you can make homemade cream cheese? It just takes whole milk, lemon juice, and salt!
Butter: Some recipes out there call for regular salted butter or unsalted butter. I didn't find it was necessary, and the texture is simply amazing and so spreadable in this recipe.
Parmesan Cheese: Use good fresh cheese for this recipe, it is worth it to grate real parmesan, and use a good Microplane grater. Or try a different type of cheese like grated pecorino romano or asiago.
Herb Cream Cheese Dip: Transform this recipe into a delicious dip, that is easy to eat with thin potato chips. Simply mix in a good amount of mayonnaise or sour cream until it has a dip consistency!
Cream Cheese is sold in a solid block or in a tub container and is used in many kinds of recipes or to spread on bagels.
Spreads are sold in stores and can be whipped or mixed with various flavors. Philadelphia original cream cheese spread is sold in a resealable tub, has a fluffy texture, and sold in different flavors like garlic herb, strawberry, chive, buffalo style, and more. These products have a longer shelf life.
Boursin is garlic and fine herb mixed and spreadable French cheese that can be made at home. True Boursin has a slightly crumbly texture, and spreads onto crackers or bread easily.
This all natural Gournay cheese is widely available around the world in many flavors.
