Ingredients

  • ¼ cup good vodka
  • 2 tablespoons maraschino cherry juice syrup
  • 3 whole maraschino cherries

Instructions

  • Strain the cherry syrup from a jar of maraschino cherries, and pour 2 tablespoons into the bottom of a chilled martini glass.
  • In a tall glass pitcher or large mason jar, pour in 2 cups of vodka. Add 1-2 drops of super black soft gel paste food color into 2 cups of vodka, and stir. Go as dark with your color as you desire, this was dark enough with just two drops. Oh and this dye did not stain or discolor our teeth if you are wondering! Keep it cold until serving time, or add ice cubes to a cocktail shake, add your vodka, and this is a great way to chill it rapidly before pouring the drink.
  • Next, hold a bar spoon or large spoon with the backside of the spoon resting on the far side of the glass just above the cherry syrup, and pour the black vodka VERY SLOWLY. The slower you pour, the more obvious the layers in the two liquids.
  • Put 2-3 cherries on a metal cocktail stick for garnish. Set on the rim of the glass!

Black Halloween Cocktails Top Tips

Maraschino Cherries: Buy them at the local grocery store, look for the ones that have bright red cherry juice and not a dark color. This helps the contrast in the drink.
Chilled Martini Glasses: Use chilled martini glasses, and pop them in the freezer for 30 minutes!
Layered Drink Tips: Use a long-handled bar spoon (or any large spoon), and pour super slowly to get the layers.
Black Ice Cubes: Freeze some black ice for your drinks, and use a fun ice cube tray like skulls or round ball cubes.
Dry Ice: You can add a small piece of dry ice, never touch, chew or ingest it! It is a great way to some pizzazz to Halloween drinks.

How To Make Black Vodka

Buy Black Vodka: You might be able to find black vodka at local liquor stores, mine did not have it stocked and it is so easy to make your own. Blavod vodka is the only one on the market as far as I know. It is expensive, hard to find in stores, and it is dyed black using natural extracts.
Make Black Vodka: Use black food coloring, black food gel, or black food dye to color plain vodka. I recommend a good food gel, like the Americolor brand. It will work with any bottle of vodka, like a more expensive traditional vodka like Absolut, or regular vodka like Titos.
Make Black Gin: There is a black gin on the market, and you could use it to make martinis, it is from Australia and might be difficult to source in liquor stores.
