Succulent Pumpkins are an easy Fall or Thanksgiving centerpiece idea. These will last up to 2 months and are gorgeous for Autumn decorating.
You can share succulent cuttings with friends to make this craft, and then replant them in your garden at the end of the season. I have made them with girlfriends several times, what a fun craft to do together...
Craft Supplies You Will Need
- pumpkin(s) large or small, any size works!
- assorted succulents cuttings (dirt/roots and dead bits removed)
- green sheet moss
- brown paper bag
- scissors or garden clippers
- disposable gloves
- Aleen's Spray Adhesive
- Aleen's Tacky Glue
For several years, I have admired and been fascinated by these pumpkin centerpieces at Rogers Gardens in Corona del Mar, California.
I took a workshop and that is how I learned exactly how to make them at home. They are so easy once you know the secret tips.
Looks so pretty to have different textures and colors of succulents...
You could host a craft party, and do this project with friends and family. Have each person bring cuttings from their gardens and the supplies to share...
Any Shape Or Size Pumpkin Works!
Top Project Tips
- Add larger succulents in the center, have some smaller ones tucked in at the edges, and something trailing looks really nice.
- You really can't go wrong, all the succulents blend so beautifully together.
- The glue dries in 6-8 hours, dries completely clear, and will not hurt the succulents.
- Pick your succulents with these tips in mind.
a thriller - dramatic larger focal point
a filler - smaller items to fill in the gaps
a spiller - something trailing or hanging down
Let's Make Succulent Pumpkins
Step 1: Pick a pumpkin to decorate, any size will work. You can take the stem off the pumpkin or leave it, but don't carve the pumpkin.
Step 2: Snip your succulents pieces. If you buy them, remove the dirt and roots. The succulents will live on the pumpkin, as you will mist with water weekly.
Step 3: Cut a brown paper bag open for a work surface.
Step 4: Spray adhesive spray or tacky glue on top of the pumpkin, cut a circle of moss that fits the top of the pumpkin. Press the circle of moss on the pumpkin.
Step 5: On a brown paper bag, pour fast grab tacky glue. Dip the largest succulent cuttings into the glue and push them into the center of the moss circle. Use a lot of glue so the pieces stick.
Step 6: Continue to add succulents and fill in until the moss is covered.
Step 7: Add some trailing pieces of succulents, some thrillers, and vary the colors and textures of the succulents.
Step 8: Care for your succulent topped pumpkin, mist once a week, and clean out any dry leaves or twigs.
The glue does not hurt the succulents, as long as you mist them weekly with water, they should last almost 2 months.
Succulent Pumpkin Care and Watering
Keep out of direct sunlight and rain. Indirect sunlight is best, and you can keep the pumpkin indoors or outdoors as long as under a covered patio. Mist with a spray bottle every week, if it's is wet, don't water, if super dry give it a spritz of water all over.
PRO TIP: Your pumpkin succulent should last as long as the pumpkin which can be 2 months or longer.
